The Battle Cry

by Amy Tong

As with many of my works, ‘The Battle Cry’ is a figurative representation of the daily happenings inside my mind. This painting was the result of a recent and particularly long depressive episode wherein I had reached the point of enough is enough. I often use imaginative escapism to bring light of my emotions and to help bring comfort and joy to my mind but with mental illness, this painting was far from smooth sailing. Anxiety would push me away from its completion in a constant struggle of wills. Yet I knew I had to finish this piece in order to overcome this period in my life, with the girl at its center cheering her battle cry.
