You Belong Here

During Spring 2022, young people from LGBT Youth Scotland were invited to attend a series of art making workshops held at the Fruitmarket Gallery Studio. These workshops were delivered by artists Louise K Fraser, Eden Bø Dower, Heather Marshall and Bea Makan.
The workshops provided the young people a space to come together to learn new skills and create work inspired by and guided by the artists. The works presented in the summer 2022 exhibition ‘You Belong Here’ were the results of the young people’s creativity, focusing on the themes of identity, community and social action.
The canvas you see here became the namesake and showcase piece in the exhibition. Over the course of a few months, young people were invited to drip brightly coloured paint onto the canvas in a free-flowing fashion; creating a truly collaborative piece. ‘You Belong Here’ was chosen as a title for this canvas, encapsulating the feelings of support, joy and power that comes with creating our own safe communities for LGBTQIA+ young people to thrive.
