Hyperconnection

by Rebecca Turner

This painting is inspired by my experience of ‘mania’ and ‘psychosis’. I felt ‘hyper-connected’ to the world and everything around me - my mind made connections thick and fast, which it can’t normally do. It was a beautiful experience and I felt overwhelming joy and love.

I fully believe extreme experiences have a lot to teach us. While it may be impossible to exist in these states and simultaneously perform the activities we need to function day-to-day in modern society, I believe that labelling these experiences as ‘illness’ to be ‘treated’ does people a massive disservice. I still view this time in my life as one of spiritual awakening and renewal. It realigned me with my values, and I have become more confident and less fearful as a result.
